Good news ! Receiving your French income tax notice does not necessarily mean it is too late to correct an error or omission in your tax return.

If you forgot to declare income, claim a deductible expense, report a donation or include a tax credit, you may still be able to correct your return.

Can I correct my tax return online?

For income received in 2025 and declared in 2026, the French tax authorities' online correction service is available from mid-August to mid-December 2026.

To make a correction:

  1. Log in to your personal account on impots.gouv.fr.

  2. Select the online correction service.

  3. Correct the information concerned.

  4. Submit your amended return.

If the correction changes your tax calculation, the French tax authorities can issue a new tax notice.

Not every type of information can be changed online. For certain changes, such as some family or tax residency situations, you may need to contact your local tax office.

What if the online correction service has closed?

You may still be able to submit a formal tax claim (réclamation).

This can generally be done through the secure messaging service in your personal account on impots.gouv.fr or, where appropriate, by contacting your local tax office.

Your claim should explain the error and include any documents supporting your request.

How long do I have to make a claim?

For French income tax, the general deadline is 31 December of the second year following the year in which the tax was assessed.

For example, for income tax relating to 2025 income assessed in 2026, a claim may generally be submitted until 31 December 2028.

However, specific situations can have different rules, so it is always important to check the deadline shown on your tax notice.

What should you do if you find a mistake?

The best approach is to act as soon as you discover an error.

Whether you can correct your return online or need to submit a formal claim will depend on when you discover the error and what information needs to be changed.

For English-speaking expatriates, this can be particularly important when dealing with foreign income, tax credits, deductions or changes in tax residence.
