You just realized you paid too much tax a couple of years ago. First question: is it too late? Usually, no.

You have until the end of the second year

In France you can claim a refund up to 31 December of the second year after the tax was collected. So tax collected in 2024? You have until 31 December 2026. Tax collected in 2025? Until 31 December 2028.

If you're inside that window, you can still get your money back.

How to claim it (5 minutes)

  1. Log in to your account at impots.gouv.fr (your espace particulier).

  2. Open the secure messaging (Messagerie sécurisée).

  3. Click Write (Écrire) and choose the "I have a claim" option (réclamation).

  4. Say which tax and which year, and how much you think you overpaid.

  5. Attach your tax notice (avis d'imposition) and any proof, then send.

That's it. The tax office has 6 months to reply, and if they agree, the refund goes straight to your registered bank account.

Quick tips

Check your bank details (RIB) are up to date in your account so the refund isn't delayed. And don't wait too long ,once that second-year deadline passes, the money is gone for good.
